Russia's food ban on western nations imposed since Aug. 7, 2014, has strongly impacted the mackerel trade and this report reflects this. This report shows how imports from Iceland and the Faroe Islands surged to dominate the entire market, at the expense of previous key suppliers Norway, Ireland and the United Kingdom. However, Russia's extension of the ban to cover Iceland since August 2015 has changed this picture once again. The latest figures show Greenland has now emerged as the largest supplier alongside the Faroe Islands, a big contrast from 2014, when it did not even make it to the list of top supplying counties. The data also reveals that imports have severely suffered since the ban: imports for the first nine months of the year are down by nearly a third in volume from 2014, and 2014 was already a low year due to the effects of the ban that year. A monthly breakdown of average import prices shows prices started increasing at the end of 2015, after being lower than in 2014 for much of the year.
